The Karnataka Mathrushree Scheme (Mathrupoorna Yojana) is a new scheme launched by the Karnataka State Government for pregnant women residing in the state. The main objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance of Rs. 6000 to expecting women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. This amount will be given to pregnant women for three months before delivery and three months after delivery at Rs. 1000 per month. The scheme will be implemented from November 1, 2018, with an initial allocation of Rs. 350 crores. The government plans to increase this amount in the upcoming five years in phases.

The scheme is applicable only for the first two child deliveries. Mothers having their 3rd baby will not be eligible for this scheme. The state government will provide the pregnancy aid amount directly through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The Karnataka Mathrushree Yojana will be beneficial for women who are living below the poverty line and require financial aid during their pregnancy.

To be eligible for the scheme, applicants need to be residents of Karnataka and enlisted in the BPL list. They must possess government documents to prove their claims. Pregnant women must also have an Aadhaar Card, BPL Ration Card, pregnancy reports, and bank account details linked with Aadhar Card.

Apart from providing financial assistance, the state government of Karnataka is also implementing the “Mathru Purna Scheme” or “Matru Poorna Scheme” to provide at least one nutritious meal every day to pregnant women, particularly those living in rural areas of the state. Under the scheme, Rs. 1000 per month is being directly transferred to the Aadhaar-linked bank account of pregnant women of BPL families for three months before delivery and three months after delivery. The objective of this scheme is to improve maternal health, which has a direct impact on women’s and children’s nutrition. The estimated cost of each meal is around Rs. 21 per meal, and the meal is provided for 15 months, starting from the time of pregnancy up to six months after delivery.

The state government had launched micro-nutrients for pregnant and lactating women who are living in backward taluks under the Mathru Pushtivardhini Scheme, under the National Health Mission (NHM). The Karnataka government has made an announcement to extend the scheme to all 30 districts in the state and allocated funds for the effective implementation of the Mathrushree scheme.

Mathru Purna Scheme” or “Matru Poorna Scheme”

The Karnataka Mathrushree Scheme will officially roll out during November this year, and the state government and the respective departments are still working on the final implementation and application procedures. Pregnant women can visit the nearest Anganwadi Centre (AWC) and ASHA/ Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) workers for assistance in filling the scheme application form and handing it over to the Supervisor/ANM for verification along with the requisite documents.

As of June 2019, 4726 women have benefited from the CM’s Mathrushree Scheme. Beneficiaries can contact their Anganwadi workers and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) for more details and assistance in receiving the benefits of the scheme.
